Benefits Reform

The AJC is working with JUSTICE on a joint benefits reform project.  Chaired by Lord Low of Dalston CBE, the aim is to make practical and realistic recommendations to improve the benefits decision-making system for claimants.  From across the UK, members of the Working Party include tribunal judges, academics and representatives from the frontline advice sector.

The Working Party will consider how to:

  1. improve first instance and mandatory review decision-making by the Department for Work and Pensions on benefits entitlements;
  2. reduce wait times for claimants appealing their entitlements to social security tribunals throughout the UK and to identify case management techniques that can improve efficiency and reduce delay; and
  3. ensure online benefits appeals are accessible to all users.

The full working group met for the first time on 24 April 2020, and it is anticipated that the final report will be published by Spring 2021.
